Confirmed chartered 12/09/1817. Assigned to District 3 in 1820. Often listed as "Benevolent Lodge No. 105" in Grand Lodge records.
1817 Proceedings: A dispensation having been issued by the Grand Master, dated July 22d, 1817, for the opening of a Lodge in the county of Northumberland, by the name of the Benevolentia Lodge, appointing Wm. Gordon, Master; Richard Claughton, Senior Warden; and John L. Chinn, Junior Warden; and the said dispensation being returned with the other necessary documents, and a
petition for a charter, on motion,
Resolved, That a charter do issue for the permanent establishment of said Lodge, by the name of the Benevolentia Lodge, No.
105, appointing the same brethren officers thereof who are named in the said dispensation.
Benevolentia is a Latin word meaning benevolence, kindness, goodwill, or favor, stemming from "well-wishing," and it's used in English to describe a generous, friendly disposition, often seen in rhetoric (captatio benevolentiae) or in ethical contexts like the brand Benevolentia Opus.
1838 Proceedings: Listed as dormant.
1840 Proceedings: Whereas, A Dispensation was issued to authorize the revival of Benevolentia Lodge, No. 105, appointing Joseph Basye, Master, James A. Snead, S. Warden, and Wm. M. Robinson, J. Warden, and said Dispensation being returned, together with the necessary vouchers.
Resolved, That the said Brethren be regularly authorized to resume their labors and go on permanently to work as heretofore they have been accustomed, upon the payment of Twenty Dollars to the Grand Lodge, in full of all arrearages to this date inclusive, including the G. Secretary's fee.
