Confirmed chartered 12/14/1808 as "Astræa Lodge, No. 85". Assigned to District 4 in 1820. 1808 Proceedings: Whereas a dispensation was issued, signed by the Grand Master, bearing date March 25, 1808, to authorize the opening of a Lodge in the county of Sussex, by the name of the Astræa Lodge, appointing John M. Walker, Master; Nathaniel Cargill, Senior Warden; and James Williamson, Junior Warden; and the said dispensation being returned with a copy of the proceedings had thereunder, and a petition for a charter, Resolved, That a charter do issue for the permanent establishment of said Lodge, by the name of the Astræa Lodge, No. 85, appointing Nathaniel Cargill, Master; James Williamson, Senior Warden; and Pleasant Hunnicut, Junior Warden. Astræa (or Astraea) is the Greek goddess of justice, innocence, and purity, known as the "Star-Maiden" (meaning "starry") who lived on Earth during humanity's Golden Age and fled to the heavens, becoming the constellation Virgo, symbolizing hope for justice's return as mankind declined into wickedness. 1828 Proceedings: Whereas, it has been represented to the Grand Lodge, that the Charter of Lodge No. 85 has been defaced and nearly destroyed by accident. Resolved, therefore, That the Grand Secretary do renew the Charter of the said Lodge, upon the payment of the usual fee for the same.
